If you have dandruff, it could be that you have a dry scalp, or it might be that you have a fungal infection. Whatever the cause, those white flakes on a black outfit are really embarrassing. You could use an anti-dandruff shampoo, which will work, but they are filled with chemicals that could irritate your skin. If you want a more natural treatment for your dandruff, read on, because we have ten very effective natural tips on how to get rid of dandruff.

1. Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar works by both dealing with the fungal infection that could be causing the dandruff and by breaking down and removing dead skin from the scalp. What’s more, it won’t leave any residue and it will make your hair shiny too. Simply mix together equal parts of warm water and apple cider vinegar and rinse that through your hair after you have shampooed and rinsed in the usual way. Leave the mixture on your hair for about five minutes and then rinse out again with warm water.

2. Lemon juice

10 Natural Home Remedies to Get Rid of Dandruff

Lemon juice is another chemical free way to treat dandruff. The citric acid in lemon juice attacks the flake causing fungus and lifts the dead skin from the scalp making it easier to wash it away. The best way to use lemon juice to treat dandruff is a two-step process. First, massage one tablespoon of undiluted lemon juice into your scalp and leave it sit for a couple of minutes. Then, for step two, rinse your hair with one tablespoon of lemon juice diluted in a cup of water.

3. Baking soda

Another good tip on how to get rid of dandruff is to use baking soda, it acts as an exfoliating agent and as an antifungal, so it’s another good home treatment for dandruff. Add a tablespoon of baking soda in a cup of water and massage it into your hair, just as though you were shampooing your hair, and then rinse it out again. If you do that daily, your dandruff will soon disappear.

4. Neem leaves

Next very good tip on how to get rid of dandruff is to use neem leaves. They will relieve an itchy scalp and they contain antifungal ingredients to fight the root cause of dandruff. Soak two handfuls of neem leaves in four cups of hot water overnight. You can then strain the leaves from the water and use the liquid that is left to rinse your hair and that will help fight the dandruff.

5. Tea tree oil

Some oils can be very effective at treating dandruff and the best is tea tree oil. It has powerful antifungal properties and it’s very soothing on a dry and itchy scalp. Mix a tablespoon of tea tree oil with a cup of warm water and transfer the mixture to a spray bottle. Spray the mixture into your hair, massage it in, and just leave it to air dry naturally.

6. Salt

Even something as simple as salt could help you clear up your dandruff. If you massage some salt gently into your scalp, it will exfoliate the accumulated dead skin cells. Try doing that before you use one or other natural dandruff treatments and it will make the remedy doubly effective.

7. Garlic

Another tip on how to get rid of dandruff is to use garlic. The smell of garlic may put you off this idea, but the antifungal properties of garlic are super-powerful and it will clear up dandruff fast. If you can bring yourself to do it, crush up one clove of garlic and mix it with a cup of water. Massage it into your scalp, leave it to sit for ten minutes, and then shampoo it out with a mild shampoo.

8. Aloe vera gel

Aloe vera gel is very cooling on the skin and it will help stop any itching too. It’s also got antifungal properties and it acts as a mild exfoliating agent. Apply aloe vera gel to your hair and massage it into your scalp for about fifteen minutes before you shampoo. Then, shampoo and rinse as normal.

9. Get some sun

Although there is no medical evidence to support this theory, many people do say that exposure to sunlight can help to reduce dandruff. Perhaps it just dries up excess oil and makes you generally healthier. Who knows, but it’s certainly not an unpleasant way to treat dandruff naturally!

10. Coconut oil and honey

Our final tip on how to get rid of dandruff is to use coconut oil and honey mask. Coconut oil is also known as an effective treatment for dandruff and honey has antimicrobial and antifungal properties, so mixing the two together makes a lot of sense. Try mixing two tablespoons of coconut oil with two tablespoons of honey and massage that into your hair. Leave it to sit for half an hour and then wash it out with a mild shampoo.
