We all make mistakes. But when it comes to our makeup, many of us keep on making the same repeat mistakes over and over again. Why? Because we’re not even sure we’re making them! As the seasons change, we like to make new resolutions.
“I’m gonna change this, and I’m gonna definitely change that!” we say. Out with the old, and in with the new.
To this end, we change our closets. We remove summer dresses we never got around to wearing, and replace them with wintry hats and scarves. Maybe we’ll even swap our dressing gown for a new one, or change our hairstyle depending on the season.
And when it’s edging closer to summer, we hit the gym like there’s no tomorrow in a bid to get our body “beach ready.”
But how many of us change our makeup routine? Very few! If you’re reading this, there’s a strong chance that your cosmetic regime is littered with the kind of bad habits and poor practices that are letting you down big time. To find out what you need to change, here are 10 bad makeup habits you should quit as soon as possible.
Blowing On Your Brushes
Hands up who’s done this one, ladies. I know I have, and I also know plenty of my friends have, too. It’s just so tempting to do that it becomes a habit; you swipe your brush into your product with a tad too much force, and then carelessly blow on its bristles in a bid to eliminate any excess.
Why do we do this? Because we were taught it? Nope! It’s just a force of habit – a bad one.
When you blow on your brush, you’re creating a breeding ground for bacteria which then builds and builds each and every time you blow. And then it gets transferred to your pores, where to causes breakouts. Not cool. The next time you go to blow, think twice and tap your brush against your hand instead.
Over Plucking
It can be really tempting to over pluck, especially when your next appointment isn’t for a few weeks. You’ve got a date or maybe you’re heading out on the town, and it’s been at least two weeks since you plucked. You can’t help yourself!
You need to help yourself. Plucking your eyebrows in-between appointments will ensure an uneven look that just looks wrong. Hold out and wait for the pros to take good care of you.
Failing To Clean Your Brushes
Take a look at your brushes. Are the bristles stiff and all clumped together? Maybe they’ve been falling out recently? Perhaps they’ve actually been sticking to your skin? If so, it’s probably because you don’t really clean them.
Good routine of maintenance is important when it comes to your cosmetic products. You need to look after these tools, otherwise they won’t do a proper job anymore. Worse still, they’ll damage your skin. Cleaning your brushes regularly is a good idea.
Not Locking In Concealer
If you’re the kind of woman who applies concealer to hide away this pesky dark circles beneath your eyes before quickly moving onto eyeshadow, you’re doing it wrong. Before moving on to anything it’s important to first of all lock in the concealer using a loose translucent powder.
Going To Bed With Your Makeup On
This is something many of us are guilty of doing. It’s okay to go to bed once or twice with all your makeup on in your late teens after a night out, but it’s very bad if it’s become a habit.
I used to do this all the time. After a long, exhausting day at work I’d climb straight into bed still wearing all my makeup. And after a night on the town with the girls, there was no way I was going to spend all my time taking off my makeup before hitting the sack.
However, any skincare regime you’ve been implementing will be nullified if you hop into bed wearing your makeup. Leftover makeup can lead to breakouts, as well as fine lines, wrinkles, and all other kinds of skin issues.
Squeezing Spots
Only young teenagers squeeze their spots, right? Because it’s a disgusting thing to do, right?
“Stop squeezing that spot, Charlene!” orders a mom to her fourteen-year-old daughter.
But nope. Lots of adult women still squeeze their spots in a bid to eliminate them quicker. But while it’s tempting to do this, squeezing your spot can spread infection, with the result being damaged skin – and ugly scarring.
Cuticle Picking
If you pick spots and cuticles, you need to rethink your values! Cuticles are annoying and many of us prefer to pick them before doing our nails. But picking these awkward beggars can lead to bigger issues than you could ever control.
Nibbled cuticles might bleed, and they will become sore. They can then get infected, with the end result being increasingly weaker nails.
The solution? Just let them heal!
Forgetting To Apply Moisturiser Before Foundation
Forgetting? Or neglecting? Either way, moisturising before applying any kind of makeup should be a fundamental part of your beauty regime. If you do not do this, your skin will be left dry and uneven. This in turn gives the opportunity for spots of your skin to cling or stick your makeup differently.
And that won’t look good at all. Apply moisturiser before foundation for a cleaner, more even canvas.
Matching Up Your Outfit And Your Eye Shadow
Remember back in high school when you’d match up your eye shadow with your outfit? It definitely wasn’t just me who did this. We all did it. But guess what? Times have changed and nobody does this anymore!
Matching up your outfit with your eye shadow just tells people that you don’t really know what you’re doing. You think you do, but you really don’t. Instead, find a shade that actually suits your eye colour – as opposed to your dress. What you really want is a bit of contrast.
Picking Your Mascara
Another bad “picking” habit. Picking at your mascara will destroy your makeup at the time, and it might also create balding lashes that you can’t get rid of!
