Oily hair can be a tricky thing to deal with and sometimes, your efforts to fix the problem will only make it worse. An oily scalp can be caused by many things; it can be a temporary hormonal imbalance, it can appear during pregnancy or you might just be genetically prone to it. One thing is for sure though, harsh treatment of your hair will definitely aggravate the problem because, if you strip all the oil out of your hair, then your sebum production will just go into overdrive and overcompensate for it. If greasy hair is a problem for you, then read these ten great tips on how to fix it:
1. Don’t over-wash your hair
Our first tip on how to fix oily hair is to avoid over-washing your locks. Believe it or not, you can wash oily hair too much. You might feel that you need to shampoo your hair every day, but what you are doing is creating a vicious circle, because the more you wash it, the more oil your body will produce. Try and break the cycle and just wash your hair once every three days or at least every other day. It might feel uncomfortable for the first few days, but your hair will soon adjust to the new regime.
2. Wash your hair thoroughly
Another good tip on how to get rid of greasy hair is, when you do wash your hair, wash it thoroughly. And, just as important, rinse it thoroughly too. Rinse for at least 30 seconds and make sure that all the shampoo has been rinsed out of your hair because, sometimes, greasy hair is caused by shampoo or conditioner that has been left in your hair.
3. Rinse with cold water
Hot or warm water stimulates the glands that produce the natural oil in your hair. Rinse your hair in a final rinse with cold water and it will help slow the production of sebum and close up the hair follicles.
4. Keep your hands away from your hair
Next tip on how to fix oily hair is, during the day, to avoid the temptation to play with your hair. Playing with your hair can transfer grease from your hands. Also, only brush your hair when it really needs it, because brushing can promote the production of sebum in your scalp.
5. Don’t condition the roots of your hair
Another great tip on how to get rid of greasy hair is not to condition the roots. Usually, the roots of your hair don’t need conditioning and conditioner will just make your hair look greasier. Apply conditioner to the bottom ¾ of your hair only, and you should be able to go longer between washes.
6. Use a clarifying shampoo
Over time, hair product can build up on your hair, which will make it look heavier and lacklustre. Use a clarifying shampoo, twice a month, and this will clean product residue from your hair.
7. Try using a light moisturising shampoo
It probably seems odd, suggesting that you use a moisturising shampoo on already greasy and oily hair, but the key to curing greasy hair is to balance the sebum production in your scalp. Using a light weight moisturising shampoo will clean your hair more effectively, but not create the over-compensating sebum production that cause greasy hair.
8. Look for products that add volume, not shine
As a general tip, when you are buying any kind of hair product, look for ones that add volume to your hair because these products tend to contain less moisturisers and oil. Stay away though from products that promise added shine, they often contain oil, to create that shine.
9. Curl not straighten
Straightening your hair with a flat iron is just going to make your hair look even more greasy, so let your natural waves shine through. Straight hair simply makes it easier, because it is easier for the oil to travel down the length of your hair.
10. Use a dry shampoo in emergencies
In an emergency, dry shampoo can be a girl’s best friend. There are some great products available and they quickly dry out the grease and absorb any odours. You get the added bonus that they also pretty good at adding some volume to your hair too. Run out of dry shampoo? Try some cornflower instead, that will do the job too.
