A California high school student expressed his love for one of his favorite video games by bringing it to his prom as his date. Chris Burwell shared photos of himself and the disc of Nintendo video game “Super Smash Bros. Melee” attending his high school’s prom.
“I took my one true love Melee to prom,” he wrote. Burwell told New York Magazine that he decided to bring the fighting game that debuted on the Nintendo GameCube in 2001 as his date after seeing a similar stunt online.
“I saw a couple weeks ago that a guy took his waifu to prom, and I thought, ‘That’s very funny, but I’m not that bad. What else could I do?’” Burwell said. “And I thought I’ll take Melee, because there’s such a big fan base and I’m one of those fans. It felt right. It was the heat of the moment.”
He said he came up with the idea to bring the game on the day of his prom, as he found himself without a date. “It was always going to be ‘Smash.’” Burwell said. “I’m not, like, a total loser, but I don’t know any girls that I would take.”
According to Burwell, most of the fellow students and chaperones at the prom appreciated the joke and the experience made his first high school dance one he will remember. “I had the time of my life. This was my first high school dance — I never did anything like that before,” he said. “I think that’s very memorable and I don’t regret it at all.”
